Posted 8/12/19

While students are on summer break, enjoying some beautiful southern California weather, Newport-Mesa Unified School District facilities and maintenance crews are hard at work to ensure clean, safe and beautiful facilities for students return on September 3.

Maintenance Work

Carpeted Classroom and School Playground

Every year, maintenance and operations cleans and maintains more than two million square feet of building space and 13 million square feet of landscape and turf. Each summer, they perform critical work at the school sites, including:

  • Deep clean classrooms and carpets
  • Replace carpet and flooring
  • Repaint
  • Seal coat and repair asphalt
  • Repair concrete and sidewalks
  • Restripe parking lots
  • Field renovations
  • Replace playground wood chips with synthetic turf
  • General maintenance repairs and inspections
  • Preventative roof maintenance at all schools
  • Preventive maintenance of air conditioning equipment

Air Conditioning

Additional work this summer includes the installation of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) at Harbor View, Mariners, Newport, Newport Heights and Whittier Elementary Schools, Ensign Intermediate School, and Back Bay High School

It is anticipated that Costa Mesa High School and Newport Harbor High School, which currently have partial HVAC, will have HVAC completed school-wide by 2020 and 2021, respectively.

Special Projects

  • Energy Efficient Lighting

LED Lighting

Our district is partnering with Southern California Edison (SCE) and their School Energy Efficiency Program to replace fluorescent lighting with energy efficient light-emitting diode (LED) lighting. This program provides more than $700,000 in incentives from SCE and an anticipated annual electricity savings of more than $100,000.

  • Automated External Defibrillators (AED)

Automated External Defibrillators (AED) are currently installed in multiple schools and office locations throughout the district. However, this summer staff is installing AEDs at every school site as a precautionary safety measure.

An AED is a medical device used to help people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. An AED can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock (or defibrillation) to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.

The district currently has several AEDs in place and staff has received training on how to use them. This training is provided every year. As part of the current projects, district and school site staff will receive training on how to use the new equipment as well.

  • Corona del Mar High School: Sports Fields Upgrade

CdMHS Field

Renovation of the two sports fields at Corona del Mar High School is under way and includes the two lighted synthetic sports fields (one with a rubber track), bleachers for seating for up to 664 spectators, scoreboards, fencing, gates and improved pathways. It is anticipated that the project will be complete by 2020 graduation.

  • Estancia High School: Jim Scott Stadium Turf Replacement

Jim Scott Stadium

While the project to replace the turf field at Jim Scott Stadium has been delayed, due to saturated soil conditions, it is under construction and anticipated that the replacement turf will be completed by the start of the winter sports season.

  • Estancia High School: 50 Meter Pool

Estancia Pool

Construction is currently underway for the installation of a new 50 meter pool and support facilities Estancia High School. The two-phased project includes construction of the pool itself (currently under construction) and the additional improvements, such as locker rooms, conncessions and surrounding spaces. The additional improvements are expected to begin construction by the end of 2019.

Future major projects, currently in the planning and design phase, include:
